It is often said that people see what to do, but God sees it WHY we do. The Apostle Paul explains how we should view things in 2 Corinthians 4:18 - So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I decided to start as a volunteer teacher Kushis Winaykan Ministry (an aid organization that works with children and adolescents in a poor community in my town, called Leoncio Prado). Certainly many people who have had the opportunity to work with such people in your country or region, will share the intention of forming these ministries or groups, in areas where the federal support from the government and from industry is lacking. These communities do not have basic facilities to live and function normally (running water and electricity). Additionally, those working in these ares understand that the "growth" and "development" usually focuses on providing support for children who instead of going to school are generally out working. Generally the general work by selling baby bottles, shining shoes, or loading with a large shopping cart on the market in the best case they need to reach for the bread at home.

Kushis Winaykan provide us the volunteers a space to develop our own gifts and ministry that have been hidden to us. "I never dared to teach and play with a children," said one of the teachers. After teaching and explaining ideas and concepts through games I began to identify personally with her. Now I can say I like to do, especially because I have a deep bond with the children, the community, and those I help with. This bond is only develop through love and dedication..
Every class I have also learned many lessons from those little children that show up in the classes. I truly love this Ministry.Almost twenty people we lead up to each teacher, twenty little people who have a very special way of expressing their feelings. Some jump and run when they see us, we hug and embrace each giving us a heart felt welcome. Yesterday, for example one of children, invited my sister and I for ice cream soother, and despite the grave poverty his heart overflowed with love and compassion for us. There was how to say NO to that child, if his offer was showing us love and trust because she knew that did not reject the pacifier that he gave us ice cream was almost tasteless because it had taken so small that you immediately remove the taste, I'd say it was a very special pacifier which invited us and that we mentioned a while returned home.

From the tenderness of Mary's smile and her cousin Graciela, to the tranquility and innocence of Query, and the seriousness of little Gino and Daniel, we all have all learned something every Saturday. Today I'm seeing their pictures and remembering how much all of them mean to me, and how at the start I was unsure if this was right for me. Now I just let the love of Jesus take me to that special place. I must say that the Lord opened a door in our lives, that door that we enter is possible, real and above all to discover the heart of the Teacher in the most needy, and we are confident that He will continue in task of seeing so many little children "Growing Happy."

March and April were very blessed months, the positive response of friends and friends of the campaign to collect clothes, shoes and toys began in February, allowed us to get help in March to more than 100 children, adolescents and mothers Human settlement of Leoncio Prado Huanuco, who were very happy with this show of affection before the change of season and the need for more warm clothes.

Also, in April launched a deworming campaign, thanks to the collaboration of the Church and Christian Missionary Alliance of Huanuco, who donated medicines could serve about 100 children from the community.

Furthermore, we continue with the strengthening of school classes in math and language, on Mondays, Wednesday and Friday, this Initiative is a partnership of 15 volunteers who devote their evenings to teach children. Similarly we are continuing with Bible classes every Saturday, where children learn, have fun, and feel and learn more about the Love of God expressed through the dynamic and rich lunch they receive at each class.

Kushis Winaykan began this year with the task of accompanying and teaching, providing reinforcement in the areas of school mathematics and language to 50 children enrolled in primary education.

.

For this task was convened 10 peer educators who have voluntarily committed during the years 2009 to teach every evening from Monday - Wednesday - Friday, to reinforce the learning of children, since many of them do not have any adult who can provide this necessary support.

.

Saturday classes will continue with biblical principles and values, where about 150 children between 2 to 14 years attending permanently, and where he received his lunch with the help of people who dream of a better world!

KUSHIS WINAYKAN IN ACTION

From the 12th till the 17th of January we received six university students from the CIMA-Peru conference to help out with the work here in Huanuco. The group of students traveled to Huanuco for a week of Vacation Bible School which served as the start of the new year of work for Kushis.

During the week of vacation bible school, more than a 120 children in the community participated in the daily classes. The major themes of the week were: a real relation ship with God and the importance of friendship. These lessons and themes were taught through games, drawing, singing, and having a fun time.

We would like to share with you the thoughts of Brith Casanova, one of the students who helped out during the week:

"I never imagined were God would take us in following His Word and His Will. When, when I reached Huanuco, I could see and understand the context, the needs of people and especially the needs of the children. During this week of service I have had an extraordinary experience. The first day it was hard for me to understand all the work with children, but little by little, God was speaking and understanding flourished, we saw hope in the small faces and arms outstretched waiting for a hug. In Huanuco, a small place in the world, there really is a great need and it is time we act."

During the week the team of volunteers meets periodically to prepare the materials and visit the children in their house. We ask for your prayers for all of the team this year that they will have the energy, resources, and time to give the attention and caring that every child deserves

We Must Act Now!

We approach the month of December and without a doubt there are great expectations, children expect gifts, clothes, and even more importantly food. Unfortunately, millions of people are unable to meet their children's need especially at this time of the year.

In Peru more than the 50% of the population is living below the poverty line and many do not have access to the basic food, clothing, and a place to live, although these three elements are considered as fundamental rights. Essentially what this mean is that one out of two Peruvians are going to bed hungry and do not have much to look forward to even on Christmas.

What can we do?

And what should we do?

We Must Act Now!

Currently, we know that our world is in desperate need and there are resources to FIGHT hunger and prevent malnutrition. We CAN FIGHT against preventable diseases, and WE CAN WORK to be Peacemakers in the world, WE CAN CHANGE attitudes of racism and exclusion, and WE CAN HELP all to receive primary education, and WE CAN ALL GIVE hug, smile, and share in the blessings we have recieved.

It is the time to WORK and to CHANGE our history and to REDUCE poverty in Peru and in the world.

What will you do?

Another Saturday afternoon in Humano Leoncio Prado and we are welcomed back by a procession of happy children to the small adobe house where the classes take place. The volunteer teachers wait for their happy children in order to share another time of games, songs, lessons, and a delicious lunch prepared with a lot of love.

Definitely this a a new time for the entire Kushis Winaykan team as we reunite again in Huanuco and this time we are joined by Renán Orozco. Renán decided a few months back to come and joined the team of Kushis to bring smiles and the message of love to all the children of Leoncio Prado. Below is what Renán wrote in describing his time helping out with the kids.

"I saw boys and girls happy and playing in the middle of a difficult time, but also I could know mostly cruel backgrounds, experiences that same cannot count and that alone is aforesaid in a face of lacking fearful look of smile. Also I saw the effort of a tireless team (Kushis Winaykan) continuing to struggle and share their time and forces without waiting for things to change but working for that change.

Upon thinking about the team and the children of Leoncio Prado, I recalled of a biblical history that tells about four friends that carried a paralytic to Jesus. In spite of the fact that the house where Jesus taught was full of people and the paralytic could not enter, those 4 men did not quit, they opened the ceiling, with cords and descended the paralytic and Jesus healed and forgave the man of his sins. (Mark 2:1-12).

If your were there, what would you have done? Would you be on the sideline with arm crossed and just looking at what happens or would be part of the group of people that with the hope of carrying the paralytic to Jesus?


It is impossible to try to deny the comfortable thing and remain behind a desk, looking at computer screen and ignore the reality that affects a lot of children in Peru and everyone, but is of brave to say: "My God, here am I, and I am yours, your are my force and everything that I have."


What will you do?

Really my visit to Huanuco was time in which God showed me his love and gave new mission to my life.

"Paschi"….Our little Rudi

His tender but penetrating look leaves us all breathless. Though he does not always come together like all the other boys and girls on the Saturday morning classes he appears to have found his favorite corner in which to color. What we first thought of as timidity now is clarified instantly when we heard him say in Quechua "paschi," that signifies "thanks" in English.

Rudi is only five years and is the youngest in his family. His family migrated from the heights of Pachabamamba to Huanuco less than a year ago in order to seek better opportunities in the city. Since then they have been living in the small community of Leoncio Field.

Before the sunrise his entire family life is arranged around the sale of vegetables in the central market. By no means is their life an easy existence and from early on the children are taught to both help in domestic chores but also in the vending of vegetables. With the worldwide rise in fuel cost and other necessary items times have become much tougher and the income does not always cover all the families' expense.

Unfortunately we do not know all about little Rudi's hopes, dreams and passion because of the language barrier. However, from his sweet gestures and tender looks he allows us to understand a small bit of his world. Now he happily attends every Saturday morning, learning new words in Spanish, meeting new friends and playing, but above all the power to learn about Jesus Christ due in large part to your generous donations.

Today more than ever Raquel, Yuly, and the group of volunteers that work with passion and energy with the children in Kushis Winaykan encourage you continue to helping and also to share with your friends the work that goes on here.
